Valhalla: The Graduate Student Bar at Rice University

If you're a grad student at Rice or even just a visitor, there's one spot that's hard to miss: Valhalla. Tucked away, this bar is much more than a place to grab a drink. It's an integral part of the grad student experience and I love being a bartender every Friday night at 11 PM.

Backdrop

Founded in the 1970s and named after the hall from Norse mythology, Valhalla has become a staple on Rice's campus. Operated mainly by grad student volunteers, it’s a bar that understands its patrons because, well, it's run by them.

Atmosphere and Offerings

The interior is both cozy and historic, a testament to the countless students who’ve passed through its doors. Dark woods, ambient lighting, and walls covered in photographs and mementos narrate its rich history. There's pictures of the previous bartenders, which have been here for around 25 years. Although sometimes rude, they are kinda important for the vibe of the bar lol.

One of Valhalla's undeniable perks is the affordable beer selection. As an MCS student and bartender at Valhalla, I've had the chance to explore a myriad of brews. The experience is enlightening, and yes, occasionally I might slide a free drink to my friends (Looking at you Desi gang and the Smoking Break group) . But it's not just about the beers; it’s about the conversations and connections formed over them which are always fun.

More Than Just Drinks

Post my Friday evening shift, Valhalla transitions from a workplace to a relaxation spot for me. With friends, it becomes our unwind zone. There's dancing, sharing stories, and a collective sigh of relief as we momentarily cast our academic burdens aside. Also, got a couple of wild stories. Not for here

Valhalla is also home to various events that amplify it's appeal. From the iconic Beer Bike event to many student-hosted events, there's always something to look forward to. And the beer is cheap so there's nowhere else to go.

Fuck Willy's Pub

Cringey undergrads. (I was the same 5 years back)

I'll genuinely miss it

Valhalla isn't just a bar; it's a reflection of the grad life at Rice. It’s a place where we bond, celebrate, and sometimes find solace from the academic hustle. For anyone new to Rice or just passing through, a visit to Valhalla is a must.
